Hello there! My name is Richelle Villabona. I am a sophomore at Southern Connecticut State University, and I am majoring in Early Childhood Education, as well as Interdisciplinary. My second major consists of a Psychology minor and the other is self-designed, and let's just say it is "interpreting cultures with a focus in Spanish, while teaching". (A mouthful. I know)

I'm merely a body filled to the brim with love, just looking for the people and things that make me feel alive. And with every moment, I am thankful.

Compilation

For Learning Event 9 (#LE9), I have compiled all my Walk my World posts and linked my twitter.

Dear World, I am Me

This picture of me is one of my favorites.  It was taken at my university to share social justice.  The word's written on my arms are something that I have carried with me for long time.

Where Did You Come From Lady (PYT)

My family is an influential part of my life.  There is not a time that I remember my life before them.  Yes, I was born into the family, but my friends and our family friends, were always just with us from the start.  We've grown together and pushed each other to be stronger and for that I am greatful.

"How I Got To Who I Am"

I mentioned my family, my school, and travels in this video.  As I mentioned previously, family is always going to be number one in my heart.  Travelling is, definitely, a priviledge that I never want to take for granted.  It feeds my soul and mind about different people and their cultures, traditions, and perspectives.  I am where I am today, because of my education and pushing through every step of the way.

Turning Points 5

In this video, I talked about the turning points in my life.  They have not been easy.  I continue to struggle with some of these things in the video, but I am not going down without a fight.  My support system drives me to do better and be better, so thank you all for that.

"Come What May"

Ahh.. my future.  I do hope that things do go as planned, but like I said, if there are new opportunities and adventures before my 'declaration' happens that's fine, too.  I'm always up for the challenge and adventure, and as long as I bring myself pack on my path, I'll be golden.

Thanks for hanging out with me and getting to know a little bit more about me!

Video Diary Series

For learning events 4, 5, and 8, I thought the best way to share my story is by talking to you one on one.  I have created a video diary series that shares with you about where I come from, what I have done, and hopefully, be doing in the future.  I hope that you enjoy them!

Where did You Come from Lady (PYT)

My family comes from the Philippines, an archipelago located in Southeast Asia.  The Philippines is made up of over 7,000 islands.  My father and mother were born in the northern region of the Philippines.  My mom’s family (pictured above) is from Pampanga and my dad's family (pictured below) is from Manila, the capital of the Philippines

I have been to the Philippines six times in my lifetime.  In one year, I went to the the Philippines three times.  In those six times, I have continued to meet more and more of my relatives and learning from them.  Last summer, I met this lovely little soul, my second cousin, Sam, and she and I are pretty much inseparable. (Pictured above: She is the one with her arms around me).  I will be continuing to visit my family, as I grow older, and who knows, maybe I’ll even teach there for a little bit.

I am the only girl among us Villabona’s.  I have to fight for my independence, voice, and food.  Pictured above is my family family, along with my Dad’s best friends.  I see them almost everyday, and we eat together almost every hour.  My uncle, aunt, and their kids live less than two minutes from us and Danny, my oldest cousin, is my best friend.  In 2009, my mother passed away from leukemia, and since then, my family has grown in numbers and in strength.

When I say “in numbers”, I mean that my family is not only my blood family, but also the family that is my friends.  Some of us have known each other since diaper days, and others though I have met more recently, I know will be friends all the way until we reach diaper days again.  My culture is my family and from them grows love, strength, and support.  I am from strong families and even stronger bonds.  I am from big smiles and even bigger hearts.

Dear World: I am Me

2 min read

Dear World,

I am a strong, independent, and caring woman. I am fortunate to have family, friends, and mentors who have helped to shape me into who I am today. I crave positivity and strength from the people and places that inspire me. With light and love, I grow. With light and love, we grow.

Sincerely,

Richelle

During Justice Week, Dear World came to Southern to hear our stories of our triumphs and our struggles.  I felt this was perfect for our identity module.  "With light & love... I grow" was orginally my six word coming into Southern.  Since that day, I hold these words to be so much more significant.  During my time here, I have truly expressed who I am and my appreciation for the people who support me and care for me.  I am the only Villabona woman in the family and that is a lot to hold on my shoulders.  I am always supposed to act and be a certain way, because of tradition and culture.  But, I have grown to be so much more than just my stereotypes.  I have lost and loved many people in my life, and I know they are shining down and wishing me the best in all that I do.

I am proud of who I am and the identity that I have built and will continue to grow.

Edit: I am participating in , and I have included this photo as my first learning event (#LE1)
